LUCAS KUMBA

(2024) SOUTH AFRICA

The children are a big inspiration for him, the opportunity to become an artist. Lucas says his ideas all stem from friendship.

From watching connections and friends in their daily lives. His desire is to show hope in his art, taking great joy in depicting this hope
and connection in the everyday life that he sees around him.

Lucas is a full-time artist of Congolese descent. In 2007, while still a boy and living in a local shelter for children, he joined the Little Artists School. His talent and ambition shone shine early on, and he won the Webber Wentzel Most Hard-Working Artist award. He sold his first piece of art for R600 while still in school, exactly the kind of encouragement he needed.

Lucas went on to study professional printmaking at Artist Proof Studio and, while working at a bar in town, he managed to sell another two paintings. This made him realise he could focus on becoming an artist. He currently volunteers at the Little Artists School, where the children are his big inspiration. He strives to instil in them the same dream he had when young: to become an artist. Lucas says his ideas all stem from friendship and from watching connections and friends in their daily lives. His aims to depict hope in his art, and takes great joy in capturing this through the everyday life that he observes around him.
